One of this year’s most resounding jazz concerts in Slovenia will feature the illustrious singer Kurt Elling, who will perform in concert with the RTV Slovenia Big Band and Symphony Orchestra.
For over a decade Kurt Elling (1967) has been considered one of the world’s hottest jazz vocalists and technically accomplished artists by critics and audiences alike. Tackling artistically inventive, demanding and incisive projects, his music challenges and stretches the established jazz lines. Elling is recipient of some of the highest accolades, among others he was presented with a Grammy Award, while as many as ten of his projects have received Grammy nominations. What’s more, he has topped the best male jazz vocalists’ charts of the prestigious Downbeat magazine for thirteen years.

Pianist Laurence Hobgood (1957) has been Kurt Elling’s music-making partner since the beginning of his career. Also Elling’s arranger and music producer, Hobgood has worked with some of the most prominent jazz musicians, such as Larry Coryell, Lee Konitz, John Pattitucci, Jon Hendricks, Regina Carter, Stefon Harris, Richard Galliano, Terrence Blanchard, Joe Lovano, Benny Maupin, Paul Wertico, Bobby Watson and Gary Burton.

Conductor, arranger, composer and pianist Michael Abene (1942) is a preeminent jazz musician. Recipient of two Grammy Awards, Abene has worked with jazz luminaries, such as Maynard Ferguson, Dizzy Gillespie, Cal Tjader, Anita O’Day, Benny Goodman, Johnny Hartman, Lee Konitz, Don Ellis, and GRP All Stars Big Band. A regular guest conductor of the Big Band RTV Slovenia, Abene and the orchestra have presented projects with various soloists, among others Paquito D’Rivera, Joe Lovano and Patti Austin.

The concert will mark a triple anniversary: the death and birth of singer Johnny Hartman (1923–83) and release of the legendary jazz record John Coltrane/Johnny Hartman (1963), which had indelibly marked Elling’s career. A new composition will be performed, an arrangement by Michael Abene of a 1963 song, You Are Too Beautiful.

The programme will also include the following compositions: Estate, Tin Tin Deo, Nicht Wandle, Mein Licht, Si Tu Supieras, Je Tire ma Reverence, A House is Not a Home, Luiza, You Are Too Beautiful, La Vie En Rose, Come Fly With Me, Loch Tay Boat Song, Billi, Rosa Moreno.
