Glitterbeat specializes in vibrant global sounds from Africa and beyond. Glitterbeat’s artists are both culturally committed and resolutely contemporary. The label’s roster is steadily growing and includes: Tuareg rockers Tamikrest (Mali/Algeria), Saharawi activist/singer Aziza Brahim (Western Sahara), Moorish chanteuse Noura Mint Seymali (Mauritania), neo-cumbiaexplorers Sonido Gallo Negro (Mexico), afro-futurists Fofoulah (UK/Gambia/Senegal), Niger river bluesman Samba Toure (Mali) and dub-folk fusionists Dirtmusic (AUS/USA/Mali).
Glitterbeat is built upon sounds and artists that transcend cultural pre-conceptions and genre specificity. Music throughout the world is now part of a digitized and intersecting conversation that does not follow predictable and easily delineated paths. It is a conversation filled with hybrids and cross-talk. The label was created to release records that simultaneously embrace evolving global textures and localized traditions and roots.
Glitterbeat was founded in 2012 by co-owners Chris Eckman and Peter Weber and the label’s first records were released in the spring of 2013. Peter Weber was the original manager of the band Tamikrest and is currently the owner of the well-established German independent label Glitterhouse. Chris Eckman has a long history as both an artist (The Walkabouts, Dirtmusic) and as a producer (Tamikrest, Aziza Brahim, Ben Zabo). Glitterbeat is based in Germany and partners with the Glitterhouse label forsome label services.
This year there will be a special focus on Glitterbeat records on Druga Godba festival in Ljubljana. Druga Godba is a festival dedicated to world music.
