Dimensions’ ethos remains simple; to unite the world’s taste-makers, pioneers and living legends across a weekend spanning techno, house, disco, electronica, bass music, jazz, funk, soul, drum and bass, psych and much more, set in a jaw-dropping 2000-year old Roman Amphitheatre and an abandoned fortress perched above the Adriatic Sea. The festival continues its peerless approach in 2015 to curating a world-class collection of artists and performers, with the second round of names now revealed.
Dimensions is incredibly proud to announce George Clinton / Parliament / Funkadelic are headlining this year. The revered funk and soul collective bring their amazing live show to Croatia as one of the biggest bookings the festival has had for a simply sublime night of music under the stars. George revolutionized R&B during the ’70s, twisting soul music into funk by adding inspirations from several late-’60s acid heroes including Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa, and Sly Stone. As one of the world’s most influential and sampled groups, their vast catalogue of classic songs have been used by everyone from Snoop Dog and Daft Punk to Prince and Outkast and countless others. George features on Kendrick Lamar’s brand new album To Pimp A Butterfly on the opening track Wesley’s Theory, further demonstrating his enduring relevance. One Nation Under A Groove, The Mothership Connection and Give Up The Funk are just some of the absolute classics from this true musical genius who will bring the house down at Dimensions.
George is joined by a brilliantly diverse range of artists; Mala – one half of Digital Mystikz – is regarded as one of the principal originators of dubstep. He is co-founder of the genre-defining DMZ label and club night with Coki and Loefah, and runs the legendary Deep Medi imprint. Next up is Gerd Janson, the Running Back boss now getting the attention he deserves; the esteemed Robert Johnson resident is fast becoming the toast of the underground. Dusky have also asserted themselves as leaders of the underground; as BBC Essential Mix of the Year contenders and DJ Magazine cover stars they weave across the house and techno spectrums. And Blawan is one of the UK’s finest techno titans, a collaborator with Surgeon as Trade and a brilliant deck technician.
On a disco tinged-tip, there is a trio of sublime names to savour. From their crate-digging blog to being one of the world’s most on-point duos, Bicep have crafted a sound wholly their own; deep and rare grooves blended with beatific beats creating sets which equal dance floor delirium. Daniele Baldelli is an Afro-cosmic disco legend and one of the scene’s founding fathers, whose glittering career started back in the 70s; this promises to be an education in music from one of its originators. They are joined by Sadar Bahar, the esteemed record collector and revered Chicago DJ who brings further soul and funk to Dimensions, as another legend joins the party.
The high flying Dutch imprint Rush Hour continue to release Chicago and Detroit influenced sounds and are one of the hottest labels around; they present deep techno from Recloose, Hunee fusing the essentials from house and disco to afro and techno together, and the equally diverse label’s co-founder, Antal, who offers further textured sonic riches, genre-skipping with ease.
Legowelt’s music crosses all kinds of boundaries too, whose palette spans early Detroit techno to deep Chicago house and everything in-between; Lone was nominated as Best Producer and Best Album in last year’s DJ Mag Awards and is one of the UK’s more flourishing talents; and Dorian Concept is an Austrian composer, producer, and keyboard artist, whose work draws on an eclectic variety of sources including modal and free jazz, funk, hip-hop and electronica.
Another trio of names take Dimensions in a different direction. Dedicated crate-digger and taste-maker Kon, who has been heralded as one of the best disco DJs in the world, is joined by Bugz In The Attic’s Kaidi Thatam, a fine exponent of soul, jazz, hiphop, funk and boogie. And Eglo Record’s boss Alexander Nut brings his richly varied sounds to Dimensions, one of the festival’s enduring names.
As a DJ and producer, Telephones has steadily gained a reputation for his free-spirited mix of cosmic, Balearic house, Italo-disco and percussive workouts; Eric Lau has supported everyone from Erykah Badu and Questlove to Robert Glasper and makes his Dimensions debut; Footprint’s label boss Zero T brings his drum and bass perspective to Croatia; and Roche Musique alumni FKJ Live has been feted as one of his scene’s most exciting producers and DJs.
Dimensions airwave faves NTS is one of the world’s most forward-thinking radio stations and returns to Pula again as an integral part of the festival. They present Jon Rust, Jon K and Charlie Bones as part of their takeover. The Seminal Berceuse Heroique label release all sorts of highly sought-after experimental sounds, from African influences to limited bass music classics; their catalogue sells at insane prices for some of their beautifully created testaments to analogue music. They present Hodge, Ekman, Kemal, Koehler and a special guest TBA.
Catching Flies, Gilla and the Dimensions Soundsystem are all announced too.
